Modeled on the Paris Opéra, this building was opened in 1879. It burned down in 1951 and was subsequently rebuilt in the same style, except for the modern auditorium, which has a seating capacity of 1,488. From September to July, its resident orchestra and dance company presents eight operas and two ballets, but many other outside companies stage recitals, chamber-music concerts, and full-blown presentations of symphonies.
