If you'd like to see an enameler at work or an operating porcelain factory, ask at the tourist office for a list of workshops, or go directly to the famous Pavillon de la Porcelaine .

Thanks to the rich deposits of kaolin (known locally as "white gold"), found near Limoges in the 18th century, more than 30 manufacturers of porcelain have set up operations through the years. Many maintain factory outlets, sometimes offering good-quality seconds at reduced prices. In the center of town, you'll find Raynaud, 14 ancienne rte. d'Aixe (tel. 05-55-01-77-55), and Porcelaines Philippe Deshoulières-Lafarge, 20 rue Armand Dutreix (tel. 05-55-50-33-43). Largest of all, with the best publicity operation, is Bernardaud, 27 av. Albert-Thomas (tel. 05-55-10-55-50), where a small-scale museum (focusing on past porcelain-related triumphs) and a tearoom adjoin the showroom.
