Logrono Travel Guide

330km (205 miles) N of Madrid, 92km (57 miles) W of Pamplona

An hour west of Pamplona and Olite, Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, and an excellent base for touring this autonomous region. Logroño is an important administrative, agricultural, and business center, surrounded by wineries, but it’s also familiar to pilgrims on their way to distant Santiago de Compostela (p. ###), still nearly 4 weeks’ walk away. Logroño’s old quarter, encased in medieval walls, is well worth an hour or two’s exploration, though this is principally a wine town: The main activity is not sightseeing but rather sipping at a bar, eating a few bites, having a pleasant conversation, and then moving on to another bar to repeat.  Its most typical and beautiful streets are Muro Francisco de la Mata and Breton de los Herreros.
