Planning a Trip

Getting There -- Trains run from London's Liverpool Street Station toward Ipswich and on to Marks Tey. Call tel. 0871/781-81-81, or visit www.nationalrail.co.uk for information. Here, you can take a shuttle train going back and forth between that junction and Sudbury. From the town of Sudbury, it's a 5km (3-mile) taxi ride to Long Melford.

From Cambridge, take a Stagecoach bus (tel. 01223/423578; www.stagecoachbus.com) to Bury St. Edmunds, and then change for the final ride into Long Melford. These buses run about once an hour throughout the day and early evening.

If driving from Newmarket, continue east on the A45 to Bury St. Edmunds, but cut south on the A134 (toward Sudbury) to Long Melford.

Visitor Information -- There is a Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall, Sudbury (tel. 01787/881320; www.heritagebritain.com/country/suffolk.html), that's open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4:45pm (until 2:45pm during winter).
