Frommer's Review

This Melbourne institution covers several blocks. There are hundreds of indoor and outdoor stalls, where you can find anything from live rabbits to bargain clothes. The markets can get cramped, and there's a lot of junk to sort through, but for some reason people seem to like it. The best part is the interesting delicatessen section and cheap eateries. Allow about an hour. The 2-hour Foodies Dream Tour of the market explores its food and heritage. It departs Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 10am and costs A$30 (US$27/£14) per person, including sampling. Well-known chefs give cooking classes, costing A$80 to A$90 (US$72-US$81/£36-£41) per session. Call tel. 03/9320 5835 for reservations. Night markets are held every Wednesday from 5:30 to 10pm in summer (from late Nov-late Mar, except the last week of Dec).

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
