Biking Through Wine Country
Driving through Niagara-on-the-Lake by car is a delight, but many would argue that the region is best viewed by bicycle. Starting in 2007, Via Rail began offering a Toronto-Niagara Bike Train, and in 2008 the program was expanded. Passenger trains have a bike cargo car, and you can hop aboard -- for C$59 (£30) per person round trip -- and get to Niagara Falls in less than 2 hours. From there, you can bike to your hotel (if you're a light traveler), or arrange for pick-up for an extra fee. Call tel. 888/619-5984 or visit www.biketrain.ca for more details.
Jet-Boating
Jet-boat excursions leave from the dock across from 61 Melville St. at the King George III Inn. Don a rain suit, poncho, and life jacket, and climb aboard. The boat takes you out onto the Niagara River for a trip along the stonewalled canyon to the whirlpool downriver. The ride starts slow but gets into turbulent water. Trips, which operate from May to October, last an hour and cost C$56 (£28) for adults and C$47 (£24) for children 13 and under. Reservations are required. Call the Whirlpool Jet Boat Company at tel. 888/438-4444 or 905/468-4800, or visit www.whirlpooljet.com.
