Henry of Pelham

Almost a century before Canadian confederation, Great-great-great-grandpa Nicholas Smith’s military service was rewarded with the deed to the land that would one day become the Henry of Pelham winery. His son would later inherit the property and build an inn and a tavern called Henry of Pelham, but it wasn’t until 1982, when Smith’s descendants Paul and Bobby Speck planted Riesling and Chardonnay vines, that these acres would finally become a splendid winery. Winemaker Lawrence Buhler’s wine is excellent, but it’s his rosé bubbly, the Cuvée Catharine (made from long-fermented, hand-picked grapes) that is some of the best sparkling made in Ontario. In summer, make sure to stop by the Coach House Café where chef Erik Peacock creates wine-friendly sharing plates made from locally sourced ingredients.
