It's a pleasant pastime to stroll along the town's main artery, Queen Street, and check out some entertaining, albeit touristy, shops. The Niagara Apothecary, at no. 5 (tel. 905/468-3845), dates to 1866 and is a store and also a bit of a museum, with the original, gold-leaf and black-walnut counters, and glass and ceramic apothecary ware, on display. At no. 13 is the Scottish Loft (tel. 905/468-0965), which is filled with tartans, Celtic memorabilia, candy, books, and other assorted Scottish-themed notions. Maple Leaf Fudge (no. 14; tel. 905/468-2211) is a tooth-aching stop: You can watch as the aproned staff makes 20-plus flavors on marble slabs. At no. 16 is a charming toy store, the Owl and the Pussycat (tel. 905/468-3081). At no. 35 is Greaves Jam (tel. 905/468-7331), run by fourth-generation jam makers -- truly good stuff. Irish Design, at no. 38 (tel. 905/468-7233), sells hand-knit sweaters, traditional gold and silver jewelry, and other treasures from the Emerald Isle. The Shaw Shop (tel. 800/511-7429), no. 79, next to the Royal George Theatre, carries GBS memorabilia and more. A Dansk outlet and several galleries selling contemporary Canadian and ethnic crafts round-out the mix.
