Frommer's Review
The gleaming metal-and-glass Hotel Osijek soars 14 stories above the town's riverwalk as if flaunting its 2004 transformation from a socialist-style ugly duckling into a sleek capitalist swan. It is unabashedly trying to attract a clientele to match its new image and it has succeeded. The Osijek's lobby is minimalist chic and full of designer-clad guests, and its Zimska Luka Restaurant seems to attract yuppie corporate types and local celebs doing deals beside a panoramic view of the river. Add to that a lower-level watering hole for hip 20- and 30-somethings, an adjacent ice-cream/coffee shop for families, and a full-service salon, and you have the basics of a trendy hotel. Views from the riverside guest rooms are spectacular, but room size and amenities don't deliver what you'd expect for the expense-account prices charged here. In addition, the staff is cordial and efficient but not exceptionally helpful, and there is an extra charge for the use of bathrobes and slippers strategically placed in the rooms. If you want a hotel on the river, however, this is the only game in town.
