Tvrđa
Osijek grew up around Tvrđa, a fortress built by the Austrians to accommodate their army in the 18th century (though there has been a settlement here since Roman times). Nowadays it is Osijek’s main attraction, and its cobbled streets and proud Baroque buildings are home to several popular little cafés and art galleries. Holy Trinity Square, rimmed by carefully restored 18th-century Baroque buildings, is one of the most attractive town squares in Croatia. The main focus here is the plague column, erected in 1729 to ask God for mercy and for the protection of the people of Osijek from the plague.
