This big red barn of a building looks like the sort of place that serves up family style crab suppers -- and so it did until a few years ago. However, after a major menu and decor make-over, the Schooner is now one of Tofino's top fine dining choices. As you'd expect, local fish and shellfish in hearty yet sophisticated preparations dominate the menu. The signature dish is Halibut Bowden Bay, in which local halibut is stuffed with crab, shrimp, and brie and served with an apple brandy peppercorn sauce. Wild mushrooms in port cream grace grilled lamb tenderloin. Breakfasts here are legendary -- smoked salmon eggs Benedict will kick-start your vacation. In good weather, dine on the deck with views across Tofino Inlet to myriad offshore islands.
