Michelle Bernstein's at The Omphoy

Miami's culinary "it" girl takes on finicky Palm Beach diners with her latest, a restaurant located in a trendy, swanky hotel featuring spectacular water views. Fans of Bernstein's will say this sounds familiar, as Bernstein rose up in the culinary ranks via Azul at Miami's Mandarin Oriental. And while there are similarities, it seems that here, Bernstein is a bit more whimsical than she is down in Miami, with dishes such as shrimp tiradito, her own spin on popcorn shrimp, prepared with a blend of limes, cilantro and spices. Bernstein's channeling of her Judeo-Latino heritage in the kitchen is where she really shines, taking an old fashioned Cuban croquetta and sending it off to the Med where it receives an infusion of feta and spinach instead of the usual ham. Other dishes include the finger lickin' good Michy's Famous Fried Chicken, a Miami import marinated in a mix of buttermilk and tarragon; a bouillabaisse with Latin accents in the form of sofrito-flavored broth; and another Michy's signature dish of beautifully braised short ribs. Prices are steep, but worth it -- especially if you consider the gas money saved from not having to drive down to Miami for a Bernstein fix.
