The Breakers Palm Beach

This 140-acre beachfront hotel is quintessential Palm Beach. Founded by tycoon Henry Flagler 1896 to house well heeled passengers at the last stop of his railway, it was rebuilt twice after devastating fires (in 1903 and 1926). The current Neo-Renaissance main building cost $7 million dollars to construct (the equivalent of $142 million today), and employed 1200 workers, including 72 artisans who did the splendid frescoes in the lobby. Since people were smaller in the 20’s, rooms tend to be a tad smaller than what you’ll find at luxe neighboring resort, but they’re plenty plush, featuring marble bathrooms, fine wood furnishings, and views of the ocean or the magnificently manicured grounds. For those seeking next-level luxe, The Flagler Club is a 21-room hotel within the hotel, featuring private lounge, terrace, staff and a Mercedes Maybach car at your disposal.

After a $15-million beachfront redevelopment project, the Beach Club now features five pools; four whirlpool spas; 20 private, luxury beach bungalows, and 10 pool cabanas for daytime rental, with a dedicated staff of concierges; a beach gazebo; and two casual oceanside restaurants. The hotel’s available spa treatments can be performed indoors or out. Florida’s oldest existing golf course is here, but millions have been lavished on it, and its sister course, to transform them into championship-level par-70 place to play. Kids aren’t neglected either at the impressive Family Entertainment Center, a 6,160-square-foot space that includes an arcade, a toddler’s playroom, an arts-and-crafts area, a children’s movie theater, and a video game room all filled with the latest in high-tech toys and games. The hotel is also home to a coterie of notable bars and restaurants.
