The Colony

The sign outside this Palm Beach mainstay should read ROXANNE PULITZER SLEPT HERE. She did, actually, for quite a while after her 7-week marriage went bust. For years, the Colony has been a favorite hangout -- hideout, perhaps -- for old-timers, socialites, and mysterious luminaries. The very old-school bar and lounge features an eclectic mix of no-name lounge and A-list cabaret singers and entertainers, but the people-watching there is priceless as octogenarian sugar daddies proudly and boldly sashay by with bedecked, bejeweled arm candy at least half their age. Beyond that, this Georgian-style hotel is known for its attentive staff, kitschy Florida-shaped pool, floral-decorated guest rooms, and, unfortunately, really small bathrooms. The 39 suites and apartments, not to mention the seven two-bedroom villas with Jacuzzis, are much more lavish -- and lavishly priced.
