Hôtel de Gramont ReviewIn the heart of Pau, on a gracefully designed 18th-century plaza whose every architectural detail has been classified as a historic treasure, this hotel was built around 1880 in a style that complements the medievalism of the château nearby. Its management spent lots of money restoring the elegant woodwork in the street-level salons and outfitted the guest rooms with late-19th-century (mostly English) antiques. Each room has a comfortable bed and is decorated differently, but in a style that evokes grand-scale country living. Some have air-conditioning. About half of the medium-size bathrooms contain tub/shower combos; the others have showers. Many restaurants are a short walk away.
