Frommer's Review
Against the cliff, this basilica was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style from the 11th to the 13th century. It's decorated with paintings and inscriptions recalling visits of celebrated persons, including Philippe the Handsome. In the Chapelle Miraculeuse, the "holy of holies," St. Amadour is said to have carved out an oratory in the rock. Hanging from the roof is one of the oldest known clocks, dating to the 8th century. The Romanesque Chapelle St-Michel is sheltered by an overhanging rock; inside are two 12th-century frescoes. The venerated Black Madonna occupies a chapel -- Chapelle de Notre-Dame -- devoted almost exclusively to it. It was built in the 12th century, with many 19th-century additions and alterations, and lies adjacent to the Basilique St-Saveur. Above the door leading to the Chapelle Notre-Dame is an iron sword that, according to legend, belonged to Roland.
