Getting There -- Seven trains travel directly from Madrid's North station to Salamanca daily (trip time: 2 1/2 hr.), arriving northeast of the town center on Plaza de la Estación de Ferrocarril (tel. 90-224-02-02; www.renfe.es). The fare is 16€ ($21). More frequent are the rail connections between Salamanca, Avila, Ciudad Rodrigo, and Valladolid (around six trains each per day).
There's frequent daily bus service from Madrid (trip time: 2 1/2 hr.). Salamanca's bus terminal is at Av. Filiberto Villalobos 71 (tel. 92-323-67-17), northwest of the town center. There are also buses to Salamanca from Avila, Zamora, Valladolid, León, and Cáceres (2-13 per day, depending on the point of departure).
Salamanca isn't on a national highway, but roads converge here from such nearby cities as Avila, Valladolid, and Ciudad Rodrigo. One of the most heavily trafficked highways is the N-620, leading into Salamanca from both Barcelona and Portugal. From Madrid, take the N-VI northwest, forking off to Salamanca on the N-501.
Visitor Information -- The tourist office, Plaza Mayor 32 (tel. 92-321-83-42; www.aytosalamanca.es or www.salamanca.es), is open Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm and 4 to 6:30pm, Saturday 10am to 6:30pm, and Sunday 10am to 2pm.
