The Casa Colorada (Red House) is regarded as the best-preserved colonial structure in Santiago, having survived devastating earthquakes and the whims of modern developers. The structure was built between 1769 and 1779 as a residence for the first president of Chile, Mateo de Toro y Zambrano. Inside is the Santiago Musuem, an amateurish depiction of the urban history of the city until the 19th century. This museum always comes recommended, but surely a major city like Santiago deserves a larger, more comprehensive history museum that doesn't use grade-school reproductions of historical battles. Still, architecturally the Casa Colorada is worth a look, and you can grab lunch or a coffee at Ambrosía behind the museum. Kids will probably like the Santiago Museum more than adults.
