These two diners are an institution in downtown Santiago, having drawn locals for more than 50 years for simple, hearty Chilean fare served by old-timers in bow ties. Located on Calle Bandera next to the Pre-Columbian Museum and also on Paseo Huérfanos, both are virtually identical in style. This is where you come to sample national favorites such as empanadas, cazuela (a hearty chicken soup), pastel de jaiba (crab casserole), and the cholesterol-boosting lomo a lo pobre (steak and fries topped with sautéed onions and a fried egg), yet on any given day they offer only two dozen main courses from their voluminous menu.
