Hotel Fundador Review

Extensive renovations by acclaimed Chilean architect Germán de Sol have injected the Fundador's traditionally frumpy European decor with a vibrant dose of contemporary style to bring this reliable downtown standby in line with its sister hotel, Remota. In the lobby, a hallucinogenic palette prevails with lime green leather sofas, egg yolk Louis XI-style chairs, and rustic, monochrome Andean tapestries and murals. The sharply decorated rooms are now awash with handpainted murals and the stained, worn carpets have been stripped away to reveal wooden floors warmed by Andean rugs. Rather soft beds are draped with crisp Peruvian cotton bedspreads. The buffet breakfast is decent. The location, on the edge of the atmospheric Barrio París-Londres, is a comfortable walk to the city's attractions and Lastarría's cafe society. This area can be noisy, though, and is not recommended for travelers looking for a peaceful day's retreat from the urban jungle.

2 restaurants; bar; concierge; indoor pool; health club; sauna; room service; babysitting; laundry service; Wi-Fi (free)

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
