Hostal Plaza de Armas Review

You couldn't ask for a more evocative view than the one from this pleasant, well maintained backpacker's hostal, which looks out over the palm-studded Plaza de Armas and the historical buildings that surround it. The hostal is reached by passing through a hectic strip of cheap food stands, then by ascending to the sixth floor in a manually operated elevator. A cheerful staff and an even cheerier ambience await. The lively common areas and BBQ area invite traveler camaraderie. The owners of the hostal preserved the antique splendor of the building's hardwood floors, high ceilings, and a long balcony overlooking the plaza, but spruced the interiors up with hip, postmodern colors and furniture. What's odd about the hostal, though, is that rooms are freestanding, roofed "cubicles" that stretch the length of a loftlike space, which is hardly conducive to peaceful slumber. The best room here is a private double tucked away near a common patio. Three of the five rooms are shared dorms, and bathrooms are shared.

Facilities:
Cafe; self-service laundry; Wi-Fi

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
