Frommer's Review
This former 16th-century hospice, founded by Ferdinand and Isabella, is one of the most spectacular hotels in Europe. Next to the cathedral, it served as a resting place and hospital for pilgrims visiting the tomb of Saint James. Even if you don't stay here, you should take a guided tour.
The hotel has four huge open-air courtyards, each with its own covered walk, gardens, and fountains. In addition, there are great halls, French grillwork, and a large collection of antiques. A Gothic chapel hosts weekly concerts. There's a range of accommodations, everything from Franco's former bedchamber to small rooms. Many of the palatial rooms have ornate canopied beds draped in embroidered red velvet. Hand-carved chests, gilt mirrors, and oil paintings enhance the air of luxury. The private bathrooms are quite sumptuous, with shower/tub combos and deluxe toiletries.
Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar; car rental; salon; room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility
