One of the best examples of recycling an old building is this stellar guesthouse, which was converted from an 18th-century manor house into a small hotel. Compostelana hospitality is at its warmest at this inviting choice. Its exposed stone walls and mellow old wooden beams evoke the past, but all the rooms and amenities are up to date. Much use is made of marble and wood -- management calls these "noble materials." The art on display is often by such famous Spanish artists as Julio Romero de Torres or Miró. The hotel lies in the heart of the monumental zone of Santiago, only 15m (49 ft.) from the cathedral.
