Frommer's Review
This luxury bastion, built between 1834 and 1882 on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples and surrounded by semitropical gardens with lemon and orange trees, combines 19th-century glamour with a modern flair. Oscar Wilde, Richard Wagner, and Lord Byron have long checked out but Vittoria remains the best hotel in Sorrento, and arguably the best in the south of Italy. The terrace theme predominates, especially on the water side, where you can enjoy the cold drinks served at sunset while gazing at Vesuvius. (In summer, the hotel offers a candlelit dinner on an outdoor terrace with dancing to live music.)
Three elevators will take you down to the harbor to sunbathe and swim. Inside, the atmosphere is old-worldish, especially in the mellow dining room. In 1921, Enrico Caruso stayed in the suite now named for him. The huge guest rooms boast their own drama, some with balconies opening onto the cliff-side drop; they have a wide mix of furnishings that include many antique pieces.
Facilities:
2 restaurants (elegant indoor venue plus an open-air restaurant in summer); bar; large outdoor pool; spa; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms
