Nightlife

There are summer shows and performances by local and foreign entertainers at the Bet Gavriel Amphitheater and the majestic Sherover Promenade, on the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee (across from the Tsemach Junction). With parklike grounds, a snack bar/restaurant, and stunning vistas of the lake, it's a memorable venue for concerts -- and also for a light meal in the cafe/snack bar during daytime, when you can make the most of the panorama. Check with the Tiberia Tourist Information Office for a schedule of performances.

Folklore events are often scheduled at the hotels, where everyone is welcome to attend. For full details, contact the tourist office at the end of the Ha-Banim Street Pedestrian Mall.

There are also many late-night pubs, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Good places for a quiet drink with live music include the Sheraton Moriah Plaza and the Jordan River hotels at the southern end of the Old City.

There are plenty of opportunities to go dancing, as well. The most unusual is the summer disco dancing on the boat operated by the Kinneret Sailing Company on the Sea of Galilee; call tel. 04/665-8007, or stop by its office at the Waterfront Promenade, for information. An evening disco cruise also leaves from the Lido Kinneret Beach (Lido Kinneret Cruises; tel. 04/672-0330) at varying times, depending on demand. Be there before 8pm.

For a lively, tropical ambience bar with a small dance floor, there's Papaya, at the intersection of the Waterfront Promenade and the Pedestrian Mall; it's open nightly 5pm to 4am. Big Ben, on the Pedestrian Mall, has a more traditional indoor pub as well as a terrace; the crowd at times is a bit older and less rowdy.

Many, in fact most, of the hotels (and even the youth hostels) around town have nice bars and pubs where you can relax in the evening and enjoy a drink and conversation with fellow travelers.
