Lexington's charming 19th-century downtown offers more than a dozen interesting shops and art galleries, most of them on Main Street and on the blocks of Washington and Nelson streets between Main and Jefferson streets. Among the best is Artists in Cahoots, a cooperative venture run by local artists and craftspeople in the Alexander-Witherow House, at the corner of Main and Washington streets (tel. 540/464-1147). It features an outstanding selection of paintings, sculptures, wood and metal crafts, hand-painted silk scarves, handblown glass, Shaker-style furniture, photographs, prints, decoys, stained glass, and jewelry. Virginia Born & Bred, 16 W. Washington St. (tel. 540/463-1832), has made-in-Virginia gifts. Collectibles hunters will find an amazing array of old and not-so-old stuff literally stuffed into The Second Hand Shop, 7 S. Jefferson St. (tel. 540/463-7559), between Washington and Nelson streets.
