Ada’s on the River

Named as a tribute to 19th-century mathematician Ada Lovelace, this view-rich waterfront restaurant was built around a wood-burning oven, and chef Randall J. Matthews’ feeds most everything into it, with stellar results. We’re talking steaks, pork chops, swordfish, giant crab cakes—even some of the lettuce that goes into the salad gets a pre-serve singe to the leaf edges. Vegetarian options are nicely flamed, too, including charred cauliflower, smoked ricotta gnocchi, and coal-fired mushroom lasagna. Save room for dessert—the Valrhona chocolate soufflé takes 20 minutes but is well worth the wait. Ada’s also serves the best brunch in Alexandria: Maine lobster omelet, lemon and ricotta pancakes, and signature brunch cocktails, including three creative twists on the traditional Bloody Mary.
