Gibson Inn
Built in 1907 as a seamen’s hotel and handsomely restored, this cupola-topped inn is such an important example of Victorian architecture that it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Inns. At the original inn, no two guest rooms are alike (some still have the original sinks in the sleeping areas), but all are furnished with period reproductions that contrast well with the exuberant contemporary wallpapers that give a pop of whimsy to one wall of the dwellings (love the room with the flamingo theme). All have hand-laid marble bathrooms, hardwood floors and elaborate crown molding on the ceilings. There are also two more contemporary buildings on site (the Grand Suites Building and the Buck House) that retain the original inn’s mix of historic and contemporary décor, but have an elevator and a fitness room. Grab a craft cocktail from the fabulous, taxidermy-laden Parlor Bar, shoot some pool in the billiards room, or relax in one of the high-backed rockers on the old-fashioned veranda. The restaurant serves local seafood and is open to all comers, so don’t expect this to be private like a B&B. Most fun perk (available to non-guests, too): rentals of all-electric golf carts to tootling around town.
