The Arthur's Pass Visitor Centre, State Highway 73 (Main Road), P.O. Box 51008, Arthur's Pass (tel. 03/318-9211; fax 03/318-9093; www.doc.govt.nz), is a good place to start. The weather in this area can be extremely changeable - never underestimate the danger; people can die when they are ill-prepared and ignore warnings. The center staff will be able to advise you on all safety issues related to walking tracks. Open daily, except December 25.
