A converted Victorian-era beaut that's been filled with colorful Pacific art, this happy B&B has much to recommend it. First, it's run by Gerry Hill and Sally James, who are not only superb hosts and cooks (their breakfasts are delish), but have a deep, if unshowy, knowledge of everything New Zealand. If you have a question on anything—Auckland history, Maori tikis, the best place to head for dinner, seek them out. They know what their talking about. They also know how to create a welcoming atmosphere: rooms are painted warm colors and filled with well-chosen pieces: a pretty throw rug here, Maori-themed throw cushions there. We particularly like the upstairs penthouse which has its own balcony and lounge. Palm Garden studios, apart from the house, have a bit more space and privacy—some of these have their own kitchenette. Finally, you'll be near Ponsonby Street which is a carnival of cheery cafes, gourmet restaurants and intriguing boutiques.
