11km (7 miles) E of Cochem, 111km (69 miles) W of Mainz
This unspoiled medieval wine town on the east bank of the Mosel has a memorable marketplace dwarfed by the adjacent hillside. Above the town stand the former cloister church with a 13th century Black Madonna of Spanish origin, and the ruins of the 12th-century Metternich Castle, also destroyed by Louis XIV's army.
