Centro de Artes Visuales, Fundación Helga de Alvear

Just outside the old town, this Modernist stone palace houses the collection of the German/Spanish collector Helga de Alvear, who died in 2025. She established a nonprofit foundation here in 2006, in partnership with the council of Extremadura, to share and promote contemporary visual arts. Its white-box, concrete-floored rooms—beautifully designed by the architects Tuñón and Mansilla—host long-term exhibitions drawn from one of the world’s most important modern collections. On the wall beside each piece is a quotation from the artist who created it. The Cuban abstractionist Carmen Herrera sums up the mood: “The straight line is, for me, the beginning and the end.”
