Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo

Perhaps the most magnificent of all the palaces in Cáceres, the heavily restored home of the Golfin family glitters with artistic treasures spanning 600 years. The Catholic Monarchs Isabel and Fernando stayed here—you can see a signed letter from them asking the Golfines for military support in 1485—and in gratitude for numerous favors they allowed their coat of arms to be carved on the façade. Look for it, topped with a cross, above a high double window. Tours are in Spanish, but the guide will be happy to give a side explanation in English. As if one sumptuous palace weren’t enough, the Golfines had another at the top of the old town: Palacio de los Golfines de Arriba, Calle Condes, 2 (turismo.caceres.es), where General Franco was declared head of state in 1936. Today, it houses a stylish courtyard restaurant.
