As the closest Mekong Delta town to Ho Chi Minh City, My Tho -- capital of Tien Gang Province -- is your best bet for short day trips to the Mekong Delta, and some tours make an overnight here on the way to or from cities deeper in. The city is just a small riverside grid along the Mekong. Most boat trips from My Tho include a visit to Thoi Son Island, with its sprawling fruit orchards, as well as Cai Be Floating Market. You could conceivably visit My Tho on your own by arranging transport from Ho Chi Minh City, and from My Tho organize a boat tour through local Tien Giang Tourist (63 Trung Trac; tel. 073/387-2105; www.tiengiangtourist.com). My Tho also makes a good base for an exploration of Ben Tre, farther to the east.
