Lake Wörther

The province's biggest alpine lake, 15km (10 miles) long, is the Wörther See, or Lake Wörther, lying west of Klagenfurt and linked to the city by a channel. In summer, it's a mecca for watersports enthusiasts.

This alpine lake's waters are quite warm -- their temperature often exceeds 80°F (27°C) in midsummer. Beginning in May, Austrians swim here, something that rarely occurs in alpine lakes of most other provinces. The little villages around Wörther See are flourishing summer resorts, especially Maria Wörth and Velden.

Lake Millstatter

The second-largest lake in the province, Millstatter See is 13km (8 miles) long, 2km (1 mile) wide, and 140m (459 ft.) deep. This beautiful blue lake, east of Spittal, is set against a backdrop of the forested Seerücken (866m/2,841 ft.) to the south and Nockberge to the north.
