In bazaar, eerie contrast to the white Wat Rong Khun (p. ###) is this all-black multi-home complex that is an interpretation of hell by the Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. The main temple-like building is centered around a wooden dining table with chairs made from antlers; shockingly long snake skins act as a runner. Taxidermy is used in nearly every design decision, although the artist claims the animals were collected after dying of natural causes. However, the bones, skins, and dark colors coalesce into something creepily intriguing. There are no signs in English or Thai to explain the artist’s thoughts, which will leave you making “heads or tails” of it yourself.
