A 700-year-old storybook castle, complete with a crenulated tower, has hosted Renaissance nobles, such luminaries as Leonardo da Vinci and the poet-biologist Francesco Redi, and modern-day visitors who enjoy a stay on a working wine estate set amid world-acclaimed vineyards. Large, character-filled apartments in the castle are tucked into turrets and medieval salons along twisting staircases and corridors, each filled with old-fashioned furnishings that are more homey than grand.
