Athlone, on the southern tip of Lough Rea and almost half way between Galway and Dublin, makes a natural base from which to explore the Midlands region. It has a couple of modern chain hotels, although it seems a shame to come all this way and stay in one when you could be waking up to a home-cooked breakfast in a sweet little Irish farmhouse instead.
