Beaches

There are wide sandy beaches at Tramore, Ardmore, Clonea, or Dunmore East.

Cycling

From Waterford City, you can ride 13km (8 miles) to Passage East and take the ferry (fare with bicycle €2 one-way, €3 round-trip) to Wexford and the beautiful Hook Peninsula. Or continue on from Passage East to Dunmore East, a picturesque seaside village with a small beach hemmed in by cliffs. The road from there to Tramore and Dungarvan is quite scenic. To rent wheels, try Greenway Bike Hire at 2 Grattan Quay, Waterford City (www.greenwaywaterfordbikehire.ie; 086/129-2724). They charge €15 per day for adults, €10 for children.

Fishing

Knockaderry Reservoir is an enormous 28-hectare (70-acre) fishery 12km (7 1/2 miles) southwest of Waterford City, great for catching rainbow trout. Purchase permits (€25) from the Centra supermarket on the main R680 road in Kilmeaden; boats can be hired for €15 from Pat Smith, treasurer of the local angling association (051/384428). The Fort William Fishery, Glencairn, Lismore (www.fortwilliamfishing.ie; 087/829-2077) is renowned for wild salmon; permits cost between €30 and €100 per day, depending on length of time and area covered. Golf

County Waterford has rich pickings for golf fans. Clubs and resorts include three 18-hole championship courses. Waterford Castle Hotel & Golf Resort, The Island, Ballinakill, Waterford (www.waterfordcastle.com/golf.html; 051/878203), is a par-72 parkland course; greens fees are around €25 to €50. Faithlegg Golf Club, Faithlegg House, Waterford (www.faithlegg.com; 051/382000), a par-72 parkland course beside the River Suir, charges greens fees of €25 to €50. Dungarvan Golf Club, Knocknagranagh, Dungarvan (www.dungarvangolfclub.com; 058/41605), a par-72 parkland course, has greens fees of €30 to €40, with a few discounts to be had if you book online.

Sailing, Windsurfing & Sea Kayaking

From May to September, the Dunmore East Adventure Centre, Dunmore East (www.dunmoreadventure.com; 051/383783), offers courses of 1 to 5 days that cost around €90 to €275 per day, including equipment rental. Summer programs for children are also available.

Horseback Riding

Arrange to ride at Killotteran Equitation Centre, Killotteran, Waterford (051/384158). Fees average around €25 per hour.
