Things To Do in Desierto de Tatacoa
Desierto de Tatacoa Attractions
Aside from the museum and observatory listed below, most fill their visit here simply driving out into the desert—there’s just one main road—to explore the wild scenery. The Cusco area has several viewpoints, like the Laberintos del Cusco near the observatory and Ventanas 4km on, that look over the red rock formations that seem much more Utah than South America. At Los Hoyos, there is a strategically placed swimming hole fed by a natural spring that is the perfect cool-off point during the blazing heat of the day.
- Museum
Museo Paleontológico
The Tatacoa Desert was filled with lush vegetation millions of years ago, before it dried out. Paleontologists are actively excavating fossils, such as giant armadillos and sloths, plus crabs and fish—the remains of which are on display at this museum on Villavieja’s main plaza. - Observatory
Observatorio Astronómico de la Tatacoa
This small observatory is open to the public every evening when a local astronomer shares several telescopes to look up in the sky.
