Eger has some delightful hotels to stay right in the center of the town. On my most recent visit, I toured three such places, all of which I would highly recommend. Eger is small, so you don't want to be too far out unless venturing to a health spa hotel. Hotel Senator Ház (tel. 36/320-466; fax 36/411-711, www.senatorhaz.hu) sits right at Dobó tér 11. This small 11-room 18th-century townhouse hotel has tremendous charm decorated with numerous antiques throughout, including the lobby area on each floor outside the rooms. The rooms are spotlessly clean and although it is right on the square, it was quiet and relaxing. The Szent János Hotel is located at Szent János u. 3 (tel. 36/510-350; fax 36/517-101, www.hotelszentjanos.hu) with 11 rooms in an attractive baroque building. Room charges vary according to which floor they are on. A double with two beds or one double costs from 15,000 Ft to 21,000 Ft, which includes breakfast, but not tourist tax. Another choice is the Offi House Hotel (tel. 36/518-211; fax 36/518-211, www.offihaz.hu) placed at Dobó István tér 5 within minutes of the central square. This tiny hotel has only five rooms making it quaint and quiet. The rooms are large and tastefully decorated. They are associated with the adjoining restaurant, so guests receive a 10% discount on meals. Double rooms range from 19,500 Ft to 26,000 Ft depending on the season. The apartment is 26,000 Ft all year. Tourist tax of 360 Ft per person, per night is not included.

Travelers on a tight budget should consider renting a private room through Egertourist. Rates in Eger are as low as 6,500 Ft for a bed with a shared bathroom and as high as 15,000 Ft for an apartment with bathroom and kitchen.
