The locali of Castello dominate the nightlife scene on Giglio, but to start out your evening, don't miss a sun-downer on the beach at Campese; it's the only west-facing waterside spot on the island. Watch the horizon turn pink and orange with a cocktail at Bar Approdo, Via di Mezzo Franco 2 (tel. 0564/804109), directly on the sand at Campese. Up in Castello, elbow your way into La Cantina di Giovacchino, Piazza Lombi, Castello (tel. 0564/806001), an atmospheric, multilevel (with panoramic terrace) wine and food bar, serving the robust Gigliese wine, Ansonaco, as well as typical local salami and cheeses. Bar Perbacco, Piazza Gloriosa, Castello (tel. 335/377735), is the place to be for aperitivo, while the younger, party-hardy crowd congregates at the steps outside Bar Da Scipione. Castello also has two discoteche: Il Maneggio, Località Il Pianello (tel. 377/1141435), is a new open-air spot just outside the old town walls, and gay-friendly; in town, I Lombi, Via dei Lombi (tel. 347/5606601), is an old-school Italian disco with cheesy summertime contests exalting the taut physiques of the Roman teens and 20-somethings who frequent the club.

Not to be left out, Porto has nighttime action, too, though more of the low-key variety. Try Il Demino, at Demo's Hotel, Via Thaon de Revel 31 (tel. 0564/809235), on the beach facing the harbor.
