The friendly staff will take your name and within minutes you’ll be whisked to a table with stools in the dark-wooded tavern. There is a full menu, but most people simply help themselves to the array of tapas and pintxos laid out on the bar top. The food is not sophisticated, but it is tasty—cold salmorejo tomato soup with jamón, marinated fish and sausages on toast, various croquettes. Then go back for crema catalana or sweet rice pudding for dessert. How do the staff know what you’ve had? They simply count the little plates and the cocktail sticks used to hold the pintxos together, then present you with a great-value check with your coffee. You can be in and out in 30 minutes.
