Abbaye Nôtre Dame de Sénanque

One of the prettiest sights in the Luberon—indeed, in all of Provence—is the Abbaye Nôtre Dame de Sénanque, even more so when the lavender is in bloom. Five kilometers (3 miles) down the road from Gordes, it was built by Cistercian monks in 1148. Just a handful of monks continue to live on the premises today. The structure is noted for its simple architecture and unadorned stone—though standing in a sea of lavender purple, from June to late July, it’s dramatic indeed. The walk from the car park is arduous if stunningly beautiful, as it winds through lavender plants and plane trees. A gift shop sells items made by the resident monks, as well as lavender honey.
