Numerous cable cars and lifts are available in town and the surrounding area to take you up the mountains, where you can take in panoramic views. If you'd like a little exercise, there are many walking paths or hiking trails as well. Mountain climbing is also possible on the nearby Dachstein massif (2,995m/9,826 ft.), and you can explore the Dachstein Giant Ice Caves, although the mountain is more easily reached from nearby Obertraun than from Hallstatt. For a great way to spend a morning, fish in the Hallstättersee and the Traun River, or try sailing, rowing, motorboating, swimming, or tennis. In winter, Hallstatt is also a sports center, with snow from November to April. You can go skiing, sledding, curling, and ice-skating, or hike along pleasant winter footpaths. The tourist office (above) will provide complete details about which of these activities will be available at the time of your visit.
