Getting There & Around

By Bus -- Þingvallaleið (tel. 511-2600; www.bustravel.is) connects Höfn to Reykjavík (8 hr.) and Egilsstaðir (3 1/2 hr.). From June 1 through September 15, one bus travels daily between Reykjavík and Höfn in each direction, leaving both places at 8:30am. For the rest of the year, the bus runs four times per week. In June through August, the daily bus between Höfn and Egilsstaðir stops at Stafafell, Djúpivogur, Berunes, and Breiðdalsvík.

In June through August, Vatnajökull Travel (tel. 894-1616; www.vatnajokull.is) runs a daily bus from Höfn to Jöklasel and Jökulsárlón and back to Höfn, with sightseeing stops at both; the round-trip cost is 5,800kr ($93/£46) for adults (half price for children).

By Plane -- Eagle Air (tel. 562-2640; www.eagleair.is) flies to Hornafjörður (Höfn) twice daily on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (once on Sun). The trip lasts roughly an hour and costs around 8,500kr ($136/£68). Hornafjörður Airport (tel. 487-1250), is a 10-minute drive northwest of town on Route 982, off the Ring Road. Taxis do not wait at the airport, but can be called at tel. 865-4354. The fare into town is typically 2,000kr ($32/£16).

By Car -- Car rental agencies at the airport are National/Bílaleiga Akureyrar (tel. 461-6000; www.holdur.is), Avis (tel. 478-1340; www.avis.is), and Hertz (tel. 522-4470; www.hertz.is).

The Höfn information center is at the Glacier Exhibition (Jöklasýning) (tel. 478-1500; www.ice-land.is; June-Aug daily 9am-9pm; May and Sept daily 1-6pm; Oct-Apr Mon-Fri 1-4pm) at Hafnarbraut 30.
