It has tent and caravan sites (NZ$22-NZ$30), cabins (NZ$38-NZ$85), and motel rooms (NZ$90-NZ$100). Mountain Jade Backpackers, 41 Weld St. (tel. 0800/838-301 in NZ, or 03/755-8007; fax 03/755-7804), has roomy dorms with beds from NZ$25. Beachfront Hotel, 111 Revell St. (www.beachfronthotel.co.nz; tel. 0800/400-344 in NZ, or 03/755-8344; fax 03/755-8258), offers 53 rooms from NZ$205 to NZ$335. I'd opt for the newer Ocean View rooms, which are more modern and better equipped than the older Driftwood rooms. They are also just a few steps from the beach. Further south, between Hokitika and Franz Josef, you'll find Paramata Lodge, Bold Head Road (www.paramatalodge.co.nz; tel. 027/367-2699), where three beautiful, modern suites look out on untouched native bush and a remote, sandy beach. They're incredibly good value at NZ$325 to NZ$375.
