Getting There

The main hubs in Húnaflói are Hvammstangi and Blönduós. Hvammstangi is 6km (3 3/4 miles) north of the Ring Road on Route 72, 197km (122 miles) north of Reykjavík, and 203km (126 miles) west of Akureyri. Blönduós is along the Ring Road, 243km (151 miles) from Reykjavík and 145km (90 miles) from Akureyri.

Trex (tel. 587-6000; www.trex.is) runs at least one bus daily year-round between Reykjavík and Akureyri, stopping at Hvammstangi and Blönduós. Reykjavík to Hvammstangi is 3 hours and 20 minutes; a ticket costs 4,200kr ($67/£34). Akureyri to Hvammstangi is 3 hours and 3,100kr ($50/£25); Reykjavík to Blönduós is 4 hours and 5,000kr ($80/£40); Akureyri to Blönduós is 2 hours and 10 minutes and 2,300kr ($37/£18). Blönduós has a bus connection to Skagaströnd, but make sure to notify the driver.

Visitor Information

The best tourist info for Húnaflói is in Blönduós (tel. 452-4520; www.northwest.is; June 10-Aug 23 daily 8am-9pm), just off the Ring Road on Brautarhvammur; look for the international flagpoles. In Hvammstangi, tourist info is at the Icelandic Seal Center (Selasetur Íslands), Brekkugata 2 (tel. 451-2345; www.selasetur.is; June-Aug daily 9-6pm, Sept 1-15 Mon-Fri 10am-4pm). Off season, rely on the regional tourist office at Varmahlíð (tel. 455-6161; www.visitskagafjordur.is; June 1-14 and Sept daily 9am-5pm; June 15-Aug daily 9am-7pm; Oct-May daily 10am-3pm) in neighboring Skagafjörður.
