Park Campgrounds -- Camping within the park is restricted to three campgrounds on the west side of the river: Ásbyrgi, on the park's north end; Vesturdalur, in the middle; and Dettifoss, on the south end. Ásbyrgi and Vesturdalur are supervised from June through September 15 and accessible to regular cars. Ásbyrgi has showers, a shop and snack bar, laundry machines, and facilities for trailers and camper vans. Vesturdalur is for tents only and has no showers, so the party crowd gravitates to Ásbyrgi. Ásbyrgi can be a zoo late at night, especially on summer weekends, despite the quiet policy after 11pm. The Dettifoss campground has minimal facilities -- basically just outhouses and a water tap -- and is only meant for hikers who traverse the park north to south and then continue on toward Mývatn. The campsites rarely if ever run out of tent space, but it's still a good idea to register in advance through the information office.

Camping is 750kr ($12/£6) per person per night, or free for children under 16. Showers at Ásbyrgi are 200kr ($3.20/£1.60), and require four 50-kronur coins. Tents can be rented from the information office for 1,500kr ($24/£12) per night.

Outside the Park -- Accommodations below are all on Route 85, near Ásbyrgi.
