The Lake Room
The main restaurant at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel overlooks the Lower Lake, a special-occasion view if ever there was one—with sumptuous cooking to match. Local seafood is, of course, a specialty, with a constantly changing menu that might include Atlantic cod with orange poached chicory, or halibut in a delightfully sweet vanilla butter. Meatier choices include Kerry beef, cooked to perfection, perhaps finished with blackcurrant jus. The wine list is excellent—if you’re having fish, try a glass of the fragrant Picpoul, a steal at €8. While this undoubtedly qualifies as fine dining, the staff cultivates a relaxed air. On our last visit, the waiter even ended the meal by showing us photos of his new puppy—it’s that kind of place.
